about

FOODLAND

Foodland is Hawaii’s largest locally owned and operated grocery retailer. Interstore studio asked Buro Loods to work together on designing multiple Foodland stores on the Hawaiian island O’ahu. The new store model was already designed by Interstore. But any future locations should get a new look&feel reflecting the local values as well as the new store layout and facade. For this project I worked mostly on block plans, creating mood boards and 3d visualizations.

AINA HAINA

Aina Haina is a small neighborhood in Honolulu and is surrounded by nature, mountains and most important the beach. This location is inspired by the seaside as well as the earthy surroundings.

look & feel

Warm and relaxing. Naturally crafted. Elegant and inspired by the beach.

LAYOUT

Layouts of Foodland all have entrances that lead the customer straight to the fruit and vegetable department, the deli and food venues. The other side of the store is reserved for groceries, dairy products and wall coolers. Just before the exit, there is a local wine bar.

interior

interior

All furniture elements were already designed by Interstore for the pilot store. Our take incorporates and gives a new look and feel, as well as updated graphical elements. The dominant colours are a combination of earthy, copper, metallic with greens and teal.

interior options

While in the process of choosing the correct look&feel I made several different iterations. Different flooring options as well as ceiling options.

PEARL GATE

I call the concept for this location Urban Jungle. Pearl Gate store is located in Pearl City, which is a very important city historically. The city is industrial but surrounded by a jungle. The combination of these values is implemented in its look&feel and graphic patterns.

look & feel

Authentic and an industrial jungle. Artisanal. Food focus and urban kitchen.

BLOCK PLAN

The process of designing the Pearl Gate layout consisted of many iterations. The entrance leaves a wide open market-like fresh food area. Ready-to-go food selections (food venues) are located around the wall, fresh foods and deli are in front of the entrance. Poke island is positioned visibly. Next to it, stands the wine bar.

Pearl Gate is the largest grocery store on the island.

EXTERIOR

The building before Foodland moved in functioned as a toy store. It had a plain exterior but with a renewed concept also the exterior was updated to match Foodland’s identity. In pictures the process is  visible as well as the final result.

This project was very alive in its process. It was constantly changing because of the many parties being involved with the project. After I left Buro Loods, the project was still not finished.

design

This location took a darker tone. A more industrial urban look with green details, in combination with general Foodland retail furniture and materials.

WAIKIKI MARKET

Waikiki Market was still in its conceptual project phase while the building was being developed. The concept for a new retail store was proposed. I was tasked with making visualisations of the exterior, working on a block plan and layout flows. As well as creating a fresh and unique mood board for this Honolulu city location.

inspiration

local identity

Waikiki market is inspired by its surrounding. Blue sea water, white sand beach a true holiday destination. With a Hawaiian lifestyle at every step. Close proximity to an international marketplace gave inspiration to the local styles, such as wooden structures merged with nature synergy.

mood

sustainability & color

The other side of Waikiki is modern and fresh. Ocean blues and bright colors show the multicultural spirit of Honolulu. There is a big focus on sustainability as well as an idea of designing custom pieces of recycled material to put emphasis on the big environmental pollution problem.

concept visuals

3D visuals

The renders are conceptual with a moody atmosphere. Some images are blended in google street view to show the real environment. The ground level is an open space connected to the street, with its food stands and an escalator leading to the main retail area.

before and after

Below are the images showing the photoshop process of the Waikiki market being set in the realistic surrounding.
